What’s the game?” Helen asked. “Poker?” “No!” everyone said in unison, eyes shifting to Hades, who glared as if he wished
“I’m…s-s—” Persephone slowed as Apollo struggled beside her. He tried again. “I’m sor—” His mouth quivered, as if the words made him want to vomit. “I’m sorry,” he finally managed, shuddering. “Is your brain hemorrhaging?” Persephone asked.
“Then why are you staring at Ajax?” A muscle feathered in Apollo’s jaw. “It would be foolish of me not to watch my hero’s opponent.” “When he’s undressing?” she asked, raising a brow. Apollo sneered. “I don’t like you.”
“I thought of it because you like picnics,” Yuri said, and beside her, Hecate snorted. Persephone arched a brow at the goddess. “What? I do like picnics.” “You like picnics alone. With Hades. You like Hades,” Hecate said.
He reached to brush his fingers along her cheek. “If I had known—if I’d been given any inkling—I would have never—”
Besides, you’d have no chance at handling this situation quietly once Hephaestus found out. He would set the world on fire for her.”
“If I was marrying Hades,” Hermes said, scooping up another bite of Persephone’s food, “I’d want a televised wedding so everyone knew that piece of ass was mine.”
“Trust, darling, I will let no one—not king or god or mortal—stand in the way of making you my wife.”
“I’m sorry. I know you asked that I stay hidden, but I couldn’t. Not when they wished—” He silenced her with a kiss. It seared her lips and her mouth, and when he pulled away, he held her face. “You were wonderful,” he said. “Truly.” Her eyes watered. “I thought they would take me from you.” “Never,” he whispered, and he spoke the word over and over again like a prayer—a desperate plea—until she almost believed it.
Hermes snorted, appearing beside Persephone holding his plate and silverware. “You sit before gods and that is the question you choose to ask?” “Hermes, what are you doing?” Persephone asked. “I missed you,” he said and shrugged.
“I knew the moment Hades spoke of you that I would love you. I never doubted for a moment that this day would come.”
