And directly beneath us, a drunk woman was being escorted out under great protest—possibly because her hat, while chaste looking at eye level, from above was clearly a graphic depiction of a vagina. In her defense, it was Ladies’ Day.
Eleanor is lucky we didn’t tear into each other like some kind of Animal Planet show.
“And what’s that?” Nick asked. “That is either a match made in heaven or an unholy alliance,” I said.
“We were split up. It was just one time,” he said. “One very spiritual time.” “And it only happened because I didn’t actually recognize her until after. Well, during.” He rubbed his head. “Wait, I’m making it worse. This is why I didn’t want to get into everything that happened during the Dark Period. It was just…you know…things happen over the course of two years and…two years, Bex.” “Relax, I think it’s funny,” I said. “Things happened with me, too. Want me to spill one to even the score?”
And then, right out of My Fair Lady: “GO ON, MY GIRL. MOVE YOUR ARSE.” It was Eleanor.
“My love, that’s four in a row. I’ve never had this kind of luck. It’s all down to you. You’re the Gold Cup,” he said, dropping on one knee. “Marry me, you distressingly foxy goddess.” Cilla blinked. “What? Are you drunk? You’ve got two to go before your bet pays out.” “If you say yes, then I’ve already won,” Gaz said. “Look, I’ll rip up the ticket right now to prove I don’t care—” “No!” Nick and I shouted in unison. “No, you clod, don’t rip up your bloody Jackpot,” Cilla said, though she had tears shining in her eyes. “I believe you. Of course I’ll marry you. Who else would be mad enough to

“Want to sue the knickers off The Royal Flush?” he asked. “I can look into it.” I grinned. “Tempting, but no.” I drew a breath. “My mother isn’t sure she can walk me down the aisle without totally losing it,” I said. “My aunt Kitty’s been divorced three times, so I’m not close with my uncles, and my grandfathers are both dead. You are the best extended family I could want anyway, so I wondered if you would mind giving me away.” Gaz blinked once, hard, then burst into the most spectacular wail. “Don’t play it so coy, darling,” Cilla teased.
“I love you,” I said. “I have never meant it more in my life.” “You know, nobody told me how long I could stay on this phone,” he said. “We can talk until it dies, and Miss Porter, it is fully charged.” “That might be the sexiest thing you have ever said to me.”
I don’t know why it takes something monumentally destructive to remind you what you want to save. This was not the life I would have chosen, but Nick would always be the person.
I picked up a pen, muttered the Pledge of Allegiance one last time, and signed the papers. I was all in with Nick once more, and it was a gamble I might be about to lose.

“But to me, he is worth everything.”
And however bad it gets with the press, or your family, or even mine, I will always choose you. I’m yours for life. Whether you want me or not.”
“It was decided an hour ago,” Nick mutters through his teeth. “Surprise.” He does not sound excited.
Freddie is now struggling. Beside me, I see a tear snake out of Nick’s eye. I take his hand and we cling to each other so tightly that our knuckles turn white.
“That you’re mine for life?” I nod, mutely. “Thank you for that,” he says. “Because I’m yours, too.”
“No more apologies,” he says. “I don’t want you to think I’m holding something over you. I’m not. This isn’t a favor. This is just love.” “I love you, too,” I say, fervently, my eyes filling with tears. “Which is why I hate to bring this up, but…”
“Bex. My love. Once and for all, are you in?” I smile up at him. “I always wanted a small wedding.”
“I can’t promise it will be easy, but I swear to you, Bex, I will always fight for you. For us. We’re a team.” “We’re a team.”
“The Queen Mum did walk by, but she just poked me with her cane and told me a curtsy would have sufficed.” “You’re lucky she didn’t crack you on the head with it,” Freddie noted.
“Don’t I know you?” “No,” Cilla says, steering him to the altar.
“We’re not giving her away, sweetie,” Mom tells him lovingly. “We’re bringing you in. Welcome to our family.”
that even if we are never a duke and a duchess, we will forever be Nick and Bex. An unbreakable we, at last.
