The Upanishads are called Shruti Prasthana because they come from the Vedas (Shruti). The Gita is called Smriti Prasthana as it forms part of the Mahabharata, and the Brahma Sutras are called Nyaya Prasthana because they are the logical foundation of Vedanta.
