But do you know what’s hotter than watching Adam Connor work out in his backyard every day? Watching him spend time with his son.
“My heart is fucking broken, sweetheart.”
don’t have a home.” “Tonight you do.”
There was something special about falling in love with fictional characters through words.
“Call me crazy, my little stalker, but I think I like you,”
You’re on your own, sweetheart.
“I won’t let everyone think I’m okay with you taking him away from his mother.” “Of course you can’t, Adeline,” I agreed with her. “How would that make you look in the public eye? A woman who doesn’t care about her kid…”
“Because I’m not supposed to like you.” The smile he gave me was soft and then suddenly his fingers were laced with mine against my chest. “But I like you very much, Lucy.”
“What did you wrap around your heart to protect yourself, beautiful girl?” I asked, letting my fingertip trail down from her cheek to her chin. Her eyes cut to mine, and I knew I had her attention. “I see you unwrap it, whatever it is you have around your heart, so I know it’s there. You change when you are with your friends, with Aiden, but as soon as you can, you wrap it back up. I hope it’s not a steel cage, Lucy. I hope you’re being gentle with your heart, taking care of it for me.”
“Are you just a character, Lucy? A character that is written by others?” I asked. “Or are you a real person?”
The feeling of security that someone was there to hold you up when gravity was too much to handle on your own, that you had someone you could trust enough to let go.
“Do you like dancing?” I asked, ignoring common sense. “No.” “Oh,” I said, surprised. “Okay.” “Ask me anyway,” he countered. I hesitated. “Will you dance with me?” “Yes.”
“I did it,” I said, curling my arms around my stomach. “I’m just like them. I’ll be just like them. Bitter. Unhappy. Angry.”
“I will always be honest with you, Lucy. My son is in love with you. Who knows, maybe I’m falling for you too? Is it too hard to believe that I like what I see when I look at you? That I like talking to you, arguing with you, watching you laugh with my son, watching you smile. Maybe after I make love to you, I’ll fall a little more. So, I think forty-nine is a good number. Ask me again in the morning, I’ll let you know how you did.”
“He is with Henry? That British actress’ kid?” “You know his best friend’s name?” “Of course I know his name.”
“I’m going to un-break your heart, Lucy,” he promised in a low voice.
“And I’m going to make it whole again. I’m going to heal it so you can feel what you do to me.”
“Let’s not play games, Lucy. I want your heart, and I will have it. Let’s not play, let’s skip those parts.”
That my nights and days and everything in between would be filled with this woman. That I wouldn’t let her go. I’d be her home. I’d give her a family. I’d be her family. Her heart.
“We can do it together. If he is interested in being in the baby’s life, it means I’ll be seeing him around.”
“Then we’ll go home after dinner. Talk.”
“I love you,”
“I’ll take care of you.”
“And I guess, since you never asked before you started calling me Daddy, I’m not asking your permission to walk you to this guy,”
