“Guess what, Orion? You’re not the only one with a dead family, but you’re the only one using it as a license to be an absolute twat.”
“You really like that word tedious, don’t you? Did you just learn it?”
Rowan liked to think empathy was a particularly human trait, but she was wrong. They could turn it off better than anyone.
“No.” He pushed play, and energetic yodeling blared from the speakers over a deep horn. Yodelieyoidieohwapidilieayeooo— I let out a long, slow breath. “Is this it?” I asked. “Is this what Hell is, right now?” Orion stared straight ahead. “Of course you can’t appreciate a skilled alphorn solo when you hear one.
“I can’t stand you,” I said through labored breaths. My pride made me say it, since I knew how he felt about me. “The feeling is mutual,” he whispered against my neck, “but I will die if I don’t kiss you.”
Since I lacked self-restraint, I would have to rely on the groundwork I’d laid earlier: brutally insulting her.
Aria, I fear my time here is running out. The false prince, my disloyal son, is impervious to my threats to allow us to return. He does not know of our beloved creation, Rowan. I have spoken with the Dying God. He confirmed our fears. If the Lord of Chaos succeeds, the mortal realm will burn. Only Mortana’s ka can reign. Only the third Lightbringer can restore us. I will return to you as soon as I can. —Moloch
Once, the mortals worshipped us. Now, they celebrate our demise. I will make them feel true terror. I will sever their heads and stick them on pikes. I will make them feel what I felt, such horror that they’re not even sure if the world around them is real. I will burn the world for seven days, and demons will rise from the ashes anew.”
“So I’m Mortana?” “No. Mortana once knew a spell for forgetting. She came here to these woods to conduct it.” His voice echoed off the rocks and trees. “She removed her ren—her true name. It’s the part of the soul that contained her memories. But in the process, she removed her ka, her life spirit, and her akh, her intelligence. She became an empty vessel, wandering through the forest mindlessly until the mortals captured her and killed her. After they hanged her, they soon forgot she existed at all.”
“Lucifer, my twin, marked one to rule—Mortana. But Lucifer is a god of order and light. I am the god of chaos and shadows, the Night Bringer.”
“The universe was made from chaos, and to chaos it will return. Order is as ephemeral as ashes scattered on the wind. It is not the natural state.”
“Orion’s mother knew you. Any chance Orion is your son?” “Yes,” he hissed, “and the name he gave you is not his real one. He hardly remembers who he is.”
Orion is a Lightbringer because I chose him as one.”
Death gives birth to life, Rowan, darkness to light, and the spirit lives on in the cycle of life and death.”
Someone was calling me a whore. I wasn’t quite sure how that fit into the scenario, but it seemed to be a classic go-to insult whenever men were angry at women.
“I thought about you when I died in the underworld. You know I’m not really here, right?”
“When was the last time a queen ruled here instead of a king? And look at what angry men do when they have power. We saw it in the underworld. Men run that city. Women are hanged, put in stocks, and whipped, all because men can’t bear the thought of women having the tiniest bit of control.”
Demons believe that when a crown is contested, the gods will choose the winner. A series of trials determines who is suited to rule. When a demon with a legitimate claim wants to challenge a ruler, they make a public declaration.
