At the pond, not only had the water receded to the point where the roof of the police car was fully visible, the roof of another vehicle broke the surface. The roof of a blue car. Her instincts screamed that it must be Ashton and Lila’s car.
She progressed through the kitchen and along the hall to the living room to ask PC Morgan to call Tom. Puffing and panting, she called out her name and gently nudged the officer to wake her. Elaine bent down and pulled the officer towards her, only to be confronted by a deathly blank stare and deep purple bruising around her neck.
‘Well, there is no PC Roy Kell registered at any of the North Yorkshire police constabularies. However, a sixty-two-year-old farmer was found dead in his home some miles away near the village of Crayke.
As Roy checked the time, Elaine locked on to the epaulette on his shoulder and the shiny silver digits – 0642.
‘So she’s schizophrenic?’ ‘That’s one of her disorders, yes. We went through some traumatic times together, but that doesn’t include the issues from her childhood, which, to be honest with you, I don’t know much about. I know she found her mother’s body hanging from a tree, but I get the impression there’s a lot more to her past, and I don’t think she recalls events from back then.
somewhere inside, he hoped she’d finally cracked and gone over the edge. From what Sergeant Burgess had said, it was plausible. Perhaps the time had come for permanent care. For him and Chloé, Elaine being committed would be a godsend. He could legally dissolve the business partnership and have Elaine’s name removed as a director – something he’d already enquired about.
My name is Harper Darmody. I’m sure the name means nothing to you, and there’s no reason why it should.’ Immersed in uncertainty, Elaine listened, hoping for answers. ‘How does it feel to be inside the barn, Elaine? Any unwanted stirrings come to mind?’
You were lucky I was around to take care of him; he was going to rape you. I wanted you to believe you’d killed him, but it was my knife that went into his neck. I swapped it for one of yours in the kitchen.’ Even though she’d worked out she couldn’t have murdered Ashton, it was still a relief to hear.
He peered into her eyes, attempting to read her, then eased away, wide-eyed and flabbergasted. ‘You really don’t remember, do you? They must have done a real number on you to make you forget.
‘No you’re not. People like you and I don’t get better. We get worse until it completely consumes us. Then we use it as a means to destroy ourselves and those around us.’
Elaine saw a tearful young girl in physical and emotional pain as she yielded to the suffering, while her father and a man of similar age took their turn with her on the bed. Elaine screamed, repulsed by the visions forming before her. Memories that years of therapy and medication in her childhood and adult life had helped shield her from. For so long, these horrors had remained buried deep within the catacombs of her subconscious, and now the battle to protect her was over.
But wait, although she’d hoped there were no more revelations, the memory of a boy materialised. Younger than her, he bore a striking resemblance to her son, Charlie. Where had he come from, and what was he doing there? Courageously, the boy attacked her father and Mr Parker while Elaine lay on the bed, dazed and disoriented, undoubtedly drugged.
Omg what if Harper really is her brother like I had predicted earlier when she thought he was just Roy.
‘From that moment, they left you alone. I don’t know why, and it’s something I’ve never understood, but unfortunately for me, they decided I’d be the one to satisfy their evil desires.
‘The police surrounded the barn and restrained them all. They’d managed to get there in time to save you from a fate worse than death.’ His eyes filled with a deluge of sadness. ‘For me, it was too late. Your brother died that night, Elaine.’
she now understood her mother’s suicide. Margaret hadn’t just failed her children; she had abetted an evil man and his accomplices. No wonder she couldn’t live with herself.
it was never their intention to consider me for release? Not ever. They changed my name. I assume to make it impossible for anyone to find me and to ensure I’d get lost in the system.’
‘Why did you kill PC James?’ she asked, steering the conversation away from herself. ‘He found me in the barn. I couldn’t let him take me in. They would have sent me back to the hospital.’ ‘Hospital? You mean – you’re not free?’ ‘While I’m breathing, I’ll never be free,’ he said. ‘It took me a while, but I had to escape and end it all.
The crime and medical report said it was a heart attack.’ ‘You mean it wasn’t?’ He smiled. ‘Not at all.’ ‘Then, how did he die?’ ‘While they were restraining him, they said I grabbed an old hay fork and rammed it through his neck.
‘The Honourable Mr Justice Horner is the father of one of the men who violated me and would have done the same to you.’
You’re not being monitored as a danger to society, Elaine. You are being monitored because you are a threat to the people involved in our abuse. They are never going to let something like this come out,’
You can’t erase the past, Elaine. It will always be lurking somewhere in your mind, scratching at walls and tearing you to shreds. By understanding who you are, you’ll become the person you should’ve been.’
‘I didn’t mean what I said about your son. It was all part of the process to open your eyes. I am truly sorry about what happened to him. Find the man responsible, and when you do – make him pay.’
Harper had to be stopped. No longer was he seeking retribution alone; he was on a murderous rampage, and she had no idea what it would take to stop him – or even if she could.
Sean. ‘You set on any names yet?’ ‘For the sheep?’ Sean appeared puzzled as they faced a field full of the woolly things. Alfie glared at Sean. ‘No, you dickhead – the baby,’ he said, turning to zip up his fly after taking a leak. ‘Why would I ask you to name a bleeding sheep?’ He walked towards the car. ‘I thought that’s what we were talking about,’ said Sean, shaking himself before turning and zipping up. ‘I worry for this baby, mate, I really do.’
Lenny’s tendency to rub people up the wrong way made it sensible to carry some form of protection.
Her little brother hadn’t been born evil. He was man-made – a consequence of his suffering at the hands of others.
Here was a man who enjoyed both the hunt and the kill of these people who had nothing to do with the vengeance he craved.
‘You’re not going to die, Lenny. People like you never do.’ Elaine handed back the cigarette and turned away, concealing her subtle smile, secretly pleased he was going to be all right.
