Sometimes a year became the cornerstone of a life.
He chose his son. Justin is so fucking lucky.
Nick played until Colton’s eyes grew heavy and he lay down on a pillow that rested against Nick’s thigh.
Danger. He’s not your dad. You don’t have a dad.
He wanted Nick to fall for him, because Colton had already fallen for Nick.
Nick was the worst possible man in the world for him to have fallen for.
Sometimes he cried. Cried boiling, frustrated tears, furious at himself for falling for someone impossible.
Cool hands landed on his shoulder and slid down his spine, all the way to where his back was trembling.
“He’s not my son.” He rested his hand on Colton’s lower back.
I don’t want “anyone.” I want you.
“Are you kissing me back?” he blurted out.
“I want you.” His whisper bounced off Nick’s lips. “I want you, Nick.”
Something sparked deep inside Nick’s gaze.
His gaze raked down Colton’s body, from his lips to his chest—where Nick was still grasping his shirt—to his waist and lower, then snapped up, lingering on Colton’s lips before shooting higher to catch Colton’s stare.
Nick groaned and buried his forehead against Colton’s.
“You, too,” Nick whispered. His lips moved against Colton’s hair, the crown of his head. He clung to Colton’s shoulders.
Nick’s heart was still hammering out a too-fast rhythm.
“Colton…” He heard Nick whisper as Nick ran his hand down his left arm. He fell asleep to the soft stroking of Nick’s fingers and the wild beat of Nick’s heart beneath his cheek.
It was the end. There’s always an end.
Felt tears slide down his face.
“Maybe I’m bi? I don’t know.
I’m not attracted to guys like that. I just fell for one person. Why does it matter if they’re a guy or a girl?”
“Jesus,” Nick whispered. “Colton…” “I fucked everything up, didn’t I?”
Colton… made him feel good. Being with Colton felt like being near a perpetual sunrise. And Colton understood him in a fundamental way.
He seemed to like that Nick a lot. I’ve fallen for you.
A part of him craved Colton’s presence. A part of him, clearly, thought Colton was pretty damn sexy and attractive, too.
He cared for Colton. Wanted him around all the time. Wanted to hear his laugh and listen to his thoughts and see his dimple-stretched smile.
We already have a life together. He’s already a part of my world.
Panic. Pain right through him, a knife to his chest. “Colton, wait. Don’t.”
Colton’s head shot up, and he frowned as Nick spoke. “You want to experiment? With me?” He looked away. “I don’t know if I can do that with you.”
Nick closed the distance between them and took Colton’s face between his hands. Leaned in and closed his lips over Colton’s, hushed him with a kiss.
He wanted more, so much more.
“No,” Nick growled. He grabbed Colton’s cheek and pulled him back. “I don’t want to forget. And I don’t want to stop. I want you, Colton.”
He wanted Colton, all of Colton, right now.
“You’re always wonderful with me.” Colton kissed him. Kissed him again.
Colton’s cheeks flushed. He swallowed, and he brushed his nose along Nick’s, pushed his forehead into Nick’s. “I hurt myself falling for you.”
Nick had never seen Colton in his sling and shirtless before, and where it might have looked goofy on another person, nothing could take away from Colton’s attractiveness.
“You’re gorgeous,” he whispered, then kissed him.
He cut off Colton’s nerves with another kiss,
Everything became liquid, sensation and Colton filling Nick’s world.
Nick laced their fingers together, then kissed each of Colton’s knuckles.
He caught his breath as he dipped his head to Colton’s chest, leaving a trail of kisses from Colton’s pec to the strap of his sling. He kissed his sling, too, right over his collarbone.
Nick laughed. He kissed Colton’s chin, the tip of his nose.
He kissed Colton again, his lips lingering, then deepening, against Colton’s.
