I also believe that we get the best decisions when people with different experiences come together to hash out the details and that true leadership requires learning from diverse teams. Like family, this is messy. There’s no doubt that it’s easier to run a company or a government when the people in the room come from the same social background, approach problems the same way, and reach consensus fairly smoothly. But easier doesn’t mean better.
We must expand the future-of-work conversations that dwell on robotics and artificial intelligence to include another critical dimension of our success: how to shift our economies to better integrate work and family and ensure that women get equal pay and share power. Only then we will have proof positive that these issues have filtered into the mainstream power structure—and broken through our biggest barrier to change.
