“I never should have said that,”
“I didn’t want mine to be that way,”
“I was hoping, if it turned out to be you, that you would want to be here. Because you cared for me.”
“Would it be so bad, staying with me?”
“I’d make sure you were safe. I could do that for you. I’ve always done that for you. I deserve a fair chance, don’t I?”
To finally tell him I loved him.
Was a future with Takkan even possible?
“Didn’t I tell you not to do anything reckless?” Seryu
But Elang was barely older than Gen. He was just a boy.
“He created the oath; he is not bound by it. Which is why we need to get someplace safe. Now.”
“Forget about her? You know what Kiki means to me. She has a piece of my soul.”
“This is your only chance to go home. To be with your beloved lordling and your brothers. Isn’t that what you’ve been agonizing over this entire week?”
“If you won’t come, then I’ll go on my own.”

I managed a smile at Seryu. We were still friends.
“When I return to Kiata, everyone will know I have magic. It’ll be hard for things to go back to the way they were.”
“There’s only so much rejection a dragon can take. You’re lucky our hearts are stronger than human ones.”
“Besides, we’d get bored of each other before long. And eternity would feel even longer with someone as troublesome as you, Shiori.”
“Ironic, isn’t it? Twenty years wasted, only to end right back where I started.”
“Then you’ll be dead, Shiori’anma. And there will be nothing I can do.”
What if you turn into a goblin shark or, worse yet, a blobfish? Caution is the creed of the wise, Shiori. Even the pearl agrees with me.

“You could stay here, you know. On land, with my brothers and me. We’d make you welcome.”
“All the same, I’m glad to have known you, Shiori. You’re interesting, for a human. When you look into the sea, think of me sometimes.”

“I oft wondered whether it had to do with you, daughter.”
“You’ve only just returned. Do not concern yourself over matters of state.”
It’s been six months, not six decades. Hurry up and go in before you ruin the surprise. I want Radish Boy to fall off his chair when he sees you.

“I’m only out of breath from seeing you again, Shiori.”
“You sound like you’re quoting one of those silly love poems my tutors used to make me read. You should know they always made me laugh. No one’s that romantic.”
I’ve missed the sound of you.
“He said it was your favorite pavilion. It’s become mine too.”
I liked the thought of Takkan spending his mornings here, reading under the trees or painting or just thinking…about me.
“Still miss the sound of me?”
“Then I’m coming with you. I’ll not have you dealing with more dragons alone.”
“May your strands be knotted from this life to the next. I wish you every happiness.”
“Yes, and hoping for your sake that she’s as pretty as she looks in the painting,”
“I’m your betrothed. Officially again, as of tonight—which means you can’t dismiss me.”
Is your head still full of seawater, Shiori? Someone tried to kill you last night. You should be staying home, where it’s safe.
“A promise is not a kiss in the wind, to be thrown about without care.”
“That lesson must be learned, Shiori, for your own good.”
