Watch what your thoughts are doing. Sometimes when we are learning to stay with emotions, we confuse that body-based process with the thoughts that made us feel that way in the first place. That is the equivalent to pouring gasoline on a fire (great if we want a bigger fire, not so great if we are struggling to manage the fire as it is). For example, you might think of something sad, but as you try to stay with sadness, you continue to think about what someone said to you and what you think it means about you.
