In the UK, the government had already identified before the pandemic that its vaccine manufacturing capacity was extremely limited. As a result, the Vaccines Manufacturing Innovation Centre (VMIC) is currently being built. This facility will, once completed, be available for manufacturing of vaccines in an emergency situation and would have been a vital resource if it had been ready in time for this crisis. I am sure that the UK will not be alone in looking to develop our own robust local manufacturing capability.
