We all have that inner voice that is sometimes helpful in making judgments, but when that voice becomes too loud, it can drown out everything else, become negative, and hamper our quality of life.
While we very often hear self-talk mentioned in a negative connotation, this is inaccurate. Self-talk can be positive and negative. It can be neutral too.
The average human being experiences between 12,000 and 60,00 thoughts per day (Simone, 2017). About 80% of those thoughts are thought to have a negative connotation, and at least 95% of them are simply repetitive thoughts from the previous day/s.
Due to our human tendency to focus more on negative experiences and less on positive experiences, we also tend to learn too much from negative experiences and not nearly enough from positive experiences (Simone, 2017). If negative thoughts start to overwhelm positive thoughts, they can send us into a dangerous downward spiral.
