Ugly bug. I squash.
Yes, good plan. And Imp? She paused from fanning the flames, far past what was safe or normal. Absolutely. No. Confetti!
This was going to be a royal flustercluck…and I was looking forward to it.
The flames moved along my body. The heat must be getting to me, because the fire seemed…curious? I would swear that it slapped my butt, except that would be weird,
she wore flames that clung to her body like a silk dress that had come to life.
My gaze shot to her eyes, trying to process the differences between this painfully beautiful avenging angel and my adorably clumsy mate who had kneed me in the crotch one too many times.
She was the living embodiment of fire. She wasn’t just supernatural, she was otherworldly.
I stared into her eyes, but no fear came, only awe. She was mine, simple as that.
“Light him up, Ryls,” I whispered.
Although, when she snapped open her flaming gold wings of fire, it carried a far greater dramatic impact than sunglasses ever could.
“You’re…oh…kay? We were coming to save you.” Anzac stumbled over the words. Ryls’ snorted. “Too late, the party’s over.”
“Yeah, the weak little human you left in the jungle did that.”
“Get him to safety! And so, help me, if you let him die, you will never explore my hidden valley again.”
Maybe they would see his mark and be relieved that I was someone else’s problem.
The two steel bars skewered me like a chicken shish kebab, or more accurately, a Phoenix shish kebab. It’s just a flesh wound. You can totally walk this off, Ryls.
I bet my beautiful wolf friend would love to play ball in the sun. That was my last thought as my magic grew too powerful, and my heart gave one final thud.
“Shh. Leave me alone, or I’ll put a curse on your butt.” I was never one to wake up cheerful and happy.
Food was always going to be the way to this girl’s heart,
This was weird with a capital ‘W.’
“You died,” Mace answered my unspoken question. “Thanks, Einstein,” I muttered. It didn’t take much to figure out I had died.
The flash of his four-inch-long incisors did nothing to convince me he didn’t want to eat me.
The backside of the mountain had been blown away, and at least fifty acres of forest had been flattened. And there you were in the middle, holding onto that wolf like it was your favorite stuffed toy.”
I need you to know that I will never stop trying to earn your forgiveness. Wherever you go, I will follow.
His voice was soft when he spoke again, “I will be anything you need.”
Well, pin my tail and call me a donkey. My mouth hung open in shock.
“I think it is time you put her in the bedroom and let her rest. Last time her mouth hung open like that, she was murdered by a beetle.
Trevor waited for me on the bed. Completely naked. I was one very lucky girl.
“I don’t usually hurt anyone else, though!” “Great. That makes me feel special.” I didn’t miss the sarcasm in his tone.
“I could never walk away from you, my little mate.
Yet you waltzed into the darkest time of my life like a sunbeam and then tripped right into my lap.
I stumbled over my words much the same way as I stumbled through life.
“Let me show you that you’re mine.”
Locking eyes with me, he licked his finger clean. He lunged for me.
“We’ve got to stop meeting like this. You seem to lose your breath every time you see me.”
I needed to strengthen my back muscles if I planned to strut around like a lingerie model with my personal set of wings.
She was tough as nails, and I was falling head over heels in love with the sassy firebird.
“I’m falling in love with you, Ryls.”
“And I am falling in love with you, my sexy angel.”
“Have I told you how wonderful you are?”
“You’re frowning. That’s not exactly what a girl wants to see when she’s making out with her man.”
“Plus, just think! If you accidentally kill me, I’ll be back.”
“Just make sure we’re both satisfied before you do me in. Okay, big boy?”
This conversation had taken a sudden detour down a weird road, one I wasn’t sure we should travel on.
“The little magical phoenix that was on your wing throwing confetti after we bonded and claimed each other.”
The knowledge that they wanted this—wanted me—messed with my resolve to singe the hair off their bodies until they looked like the jaguar versions of hairless mole rats.
How could I have the strength to die and come back to life but not be strong enough to keep myself away from five lickably hot men that looked like they fell out of a fireman’s charity calendar?
They could have the common decency to gain fifty pounds and let themselves go like other guys do during breakups,”
Was it all emotions, or just certain emotions? Did that include hungry and horny? Because I was a whole lot of both lately.
Not because they deserved the opportunity to make amends. After all, you could only leave a girl to die in the jungle so many times before you lost that right,
Right now, my heart rate spikes in irritation every time I look at Anzac and Mace.”
