“I know what Fotze means.”
Where a mind had broken or crumbled in one aspect, a scaffold would be hastily thrown up by the unconscious, then slowly elaborated into a buttress or defensive wall.
Others, on the other hand, would embellish into grotesqueries; would become gross deformities of personality. Some would even accumulate into great dark palaces of madness that overwhelmed the mind: monstrous belvederes that shadowed and distorted the view in all directions.
“The water is deep—very, very deep—but calm. I need you to imagine that beneath us, the ocean is filled with all the things, all the memories, all the events that have happened in your life. And swimming among them are all the versions of you there are or ever have been:
“You have to understand—it’s the nature of the Devil to disguise his presence. The truth is that the Devil comes into all of our lives, at least once, at one time or another. The truth is nobody really believes in him anymore, which is his most powerful weapon.
Jan of the Black Heart.”
