“You didn’t trick me into anything. And you were magnificent today. You stopped a battle before it could start a war. Your magic brought peace. It was a necessary and strategic move. Never doubt
that.”
but I knew one fact to be true: just because I had the power to do so didn’t mean I should.
“I’m happy to have my full power back, my memories. But… inspiring such fear, it’s not what I desire.
“You must pay the goddess a tithe to enter the Well of Memory’s chamber.”
“This is your firstborn? The hybrid warrior?”
“A hybrid child.”
With the exception of Pride, she’d tried to seduce them all to no avail. For a group of scheming, selfish demons, they certainly protected one another when matters of the heart were concerned.
“From this day forward, a curse will sweep through this land. You will forget all but your hate. Love, kindness, every good thing in your world will cease. One day that will change. When you know true happiness, I vow to take whatever you love, too.”
“Six years, six months, and six days.”
“Time will be measured in the Seven Circles. Not any other hell dimension. During that period, you will not set foot in mine or any of my brothers’ Houses of Sin unless invited. If you do, then you risk a curse of your own. One I shall not reveal until it’s too late.”
And if you cannot break the curse within that time, it shall never be undone. No magic, no trickery, no bargain will matter. For all eternity, you shall never have what you love most.”
“When I do break it, and when I decide I no longer wish to have you taint this realm, you will be banished from the Seven Circles. And you must erase the memory of this conversation.”
Lucia was derived from lux, the Latin word for light. Pride, Lucifer, was the Morningstar.
Pride had always remained true to himself; it was Lucia who hadn’t been honest with herself or with him about her desires. He’d called her on her lies, begged her to tell him the truth, but she’d refused.
He vowed to do anything to make her happy. He promised to miss the feast, to stay by her side, to work through whatever was troubling her.
Nicoletta of House Vengeance
“I want to forget.” Lucia held her mother’s gaze. “I know you have a spell from the Crone. I want it. And I want to be left alone until I’m ready to come back. If I’m ever ready.”
“Sicily.”
“I’ll take the dagger. Just see to it I never fall for another prince of Hell again.”
“Drink. It will help ease the pain, bambina.”
Maria will monitor the situation from afar and will set you up with a family in a dark coven.”
Claudia.
“Thank you for trusting me.”
“Vengeance. It’s an ugly pursuit that encompasses many sins. Careful,”
“or your pride will be your downfall, Sursea. A bit ironic, all things considered.
“A day.”
“This will ensure I don’t lose you again. Curse or not, we’ll get through it this time.”
want your heart, Samael. I want your love without spells and tinctures keeping it locked away. Only having half of you is a curse, too. We both deserve more. We deserve true happiness.
“So decide now, before we complete our bond, if this—what we have right now—will be good enough for you. If I cannot love you, if I cannot offer you my heart in return, you need to decide if that’s something you can live with. If you cannot…”
“I might have to hurt someone I care about. Someone that doesn’t deserve an ounce of pain.” Wrath kissed the top of my head. “I’m sorry.”
And if the one they loved most of all was potentially in danger? Then they’d unleash hell to save them.
Wolves were too close to nature for courtly games.
Nonna never liked that Vittoria, Claudia, and I were such close friends.
They’d purposely tried to keep us apart because of who we all really were.
The coven rebanded, but they won’t allow anyone aside from the council to attend meetings.
they’ve put a block on my magic. I haven’t even been able to dream.”
“They were able to free old Sofia Santorini’s mind from its curse. My aunt was heading over to her house now to see what she remembers, if anything.”
“The blade expects an equal trade,” she finally said. “If you wish to break a curse, it will want to use your power to do so. All of it.”
“The one who’s cursed needs to use it. Willingly.”
“The cursed one needs to feed the blade your magic until it collects each drop.”
“Once I activate it with my blood, you have only one hour to complete the rest of the power exchange.
“After I feed it my blood, you will do the same. Then your hour begins.”
Claudia’s earnest expression held no deception. No ulterior motives. She was simply a good friend. A decent person. Someone who was willing to help a loved one in need.
If giving up my power could help undo even the slightest bit of pain I’d caused by working with the First Witch, there really was no choice left to make at all.
“Thank you, Claudia. For always being the truest friend I’ve ever had.”
Magic does not make you powerful. Your courage. Your heart. Your mind. Your very soul makes you a force to be reckoned with. My only concern is whether you will survive.
I will take you without magic. Without godsdamn royal titles. Or care for anything other than your happiness. Once restored to my full power, I’ll have enough magic for both of us. Trust in that.”
