Morissette and [Fiona] Apple[*] focused their anger on many of the same issues as Riot Grrrl; however, they were carefully constructed as non-threatening and their form of female empowerment was something to buy in CD format rather than something to actively produce. . . . Morissette is unusual only in that she is a woman expressing the same ideas. But how strong does that make her? Her discussion of sexuality in “You Oughta Know” suggests that a good girlfriend is one who will perform sexual acts for a man at any time, even in a movie theater.
