“I feel better actually. I think I just needed to hit something.” “Yeah, but did it have to be my face?” A quiet beat sat. I nodded. “Yeah. I think it did.”
“Am I still an unimaginative fuck?” I asked with a cock of my head. A lazy half-grin took his head back, and his teeth peeked out and grabbed his bottom lip. “You’re all right.” “Wrong.” I pushed off of the doorframe, leaving him behind with the truth rolling out and over my shoulder. “I’d rock your entire fucking world.” I heard him suck in a slow breath before catching up to me, mumbling something under his breath that sounded distinctly like, “too late.”
If I wasn’t here, I wouldn’t be who I am now, and you and I wouldn’t have anything in common.”
“What do we have in common?” His long eyelashes drew up, fixing his black flames on me. “Pain.”
“How we grew up, our parents, the people we chose to love. It all brought us pain,”
“It’s because we’re made of darkness that we’re able to see the little bit of light in each other.”
I didn’t get it. I still don’t get most of it.” “But you like it now?” “I like when you read it to me.”
“It was about Abigail, right?”
Every muscle in his face froze, a gloss sweeping over his vivid stare. The air melded with tension as we stared and said nothing. Then he ducked his head to the floor, hanging his hands on his waist. He nodded without looking up. “Yeah. Yeah, it’s about her.”
“She was a really special woman.” The way he was staring at me… something in his eyes was screaming, and I wanted to scream back, but I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t even know what he was trying to say with that blistering look.
“You’re right,” he murmured over my lips. His eyes never left mine. “You really don’t get poetry.”
