trained as her handlers, not yours. When faced with this issue, he had to have a plan,” Brennan adds.
“Can we tell Jolie who she is?” Davis asks the question we are all wondering. “No. This is no longer a test for you—taking her away was your test. Bringing herself back into the fold is hers. You will not say anything or I will make her disappear again. Do we understand each other? She has one last test, and you will all play your parts. I need to see if deep down she still has that fire.”
“One last thing before I go. Zircon, or Jolie, has a new handler.” We all look in his direction and I already have a feeling this isn’t going to be good. “Kai.” “No fucking way,” I roar in outrage. Not him! “He is set to start school tomorrow. I suggest you learn to get along because he isn’t going anywhere. Her protection is top priority. While you’re all capable, it’s protocol. Brennan can fill you in on all the details later. You will all report to the training facility for twenty-four hours and then return home. I will see you at the gala where I expect you all to be on your best

Brennan, but he shakes his head and scratches his nose, our signal that it’s not time to talk.
“One day she wanted takeout. We were all busy, so she was hanging out with Kai and . . .” He hesitates. “And one of his friends. Kai was messaging a girl, organising a party, and his friend offered to take her. There was an accident . . . I blame Kai, Jolie. He should have taken her. He promised to look out for her. If he went, she would have been sitting in the back seat. We wouldn’t have lost her.” His beautiful green eyes water at the memories.
“Wait, back up. We haven’t moved past the brothers part,” Jimmie adds, looking at Kai and then over to Case. “Different mums, same father. My mum was just a poor girl from a poor family.”
Brennan swears—and he isn’t one to swear often. “I wanted to explain it better, but Chester found out that Mr Z wanted to continue to create more of us. He had no issues with continuing our lines, since our biological parents are all still alive. They have created enough embryos to make more of us and have enough research to recreate versions of us using these other embryos. The issue is that Jolie was the last remaining embryo, and as you probably suspect, Mr Z is her biological father. His wife died when she gave birth to Jolie.”
“Let’s get this straight because I’m so damn confused. You all love her like us. There are no more embryos left, and they want to use her to create more. Mr Z is obsessed with his dead wife’s DNA. You decided to fake her death and run away with her until you could find a way to kill the man who runs our entire organisation. Somehow, child services took her, and you went into hiding. You kidnap a scientist before getting yourself magically kidnapped and brought back here. Now you need Davis to interrogate said scientist.
You plan for us to work alongside Mr Z’s mysterious brother, whom none of us have ever heard about. You can understand why we are a little thrown . . . it just sounds like you’re feeding us some bullshit story. If this is all above board, how about you answer some questions for Davis? Alone.”
Laughn’s brother steps closer. He appears more normal than Laughn, but the look in his eyes tells me I should be afraid of him. The guys move aside, and Creed kneels in front of me. “Please don’t run—you were the one thing that helped keep my humanity. Without you, the darkness will consume me.”
You can find someone’s weakness within minutes of meeting them. That can assist us with missions when you’re older, but only if you practise.” “But that isn’t cool. Case can see in the dark, Marlow is like a supercomputer, and Laughn can be electrocuted and feel nothing. Davis can tell when people are lying, and Boston is super smart—he remembers things from when he was a baby. I can’t even get drunk.”
Laughn steps forward and smiles. “You look absolutely stunning in that dress, but I plan to rip it off later with my—” “Laughn Taylor! You watch your manners, young man. That’s not how you talk to a lady in front of company. Now let’s go so we are there on time—I don’t need Elizabeth to yap on about us being late. I already have a headache starting to form just thinking about spending an evening with her.”
I run towards Trace and throw myself into his arms, my back turned to Mr Z. “He is up to something,” I whisper. He buries his head into my hair, pulling me closer. “I know, just play along. This will all be over soon.”
Trace: I’m here. Fight me. Case. WTF how? Trace: He used finding me as a pawn. He is up to something. Trace: Get mad at me for taking her. He will believe it. Case: Roger that, will fill the guys in. You message yours.
