“May I ask you all to kindly not look so happy and joyful, please,” Gofraid booms at us. “Firstly, because it aggravates me. You’re all ugly enough without all this smiling. And secondly, we are navigating a diplomatic disaster. Some gravitas would be appreciated.”

“Thank you all for agreeing that we must placate him,” Gofraid concludes. “I do very much enjoy having this same conversation with you all every single day. Very refreshing. So! We must now think of some largesse to keep his friendship.”

What a lovely idea, to think that this life might simply stop, and that a new one may start again. No eternal damnation hanging like a knife over one’s neck as we struggle to be worthy of salvation.
