I mutter the words into my horn as I drain the last drops: “I don’t want to dull the memory of her.”
She comes upon me without warning, like a summer storm. Such a small slip of a woman and yet when we’re alone together, she sweeps my feet from under me as thoroughly as a flood.
“Why does it feel that way when you touch me?” He says nothing, still concentrating on nurturing his own stillness. I try again; “Everyone else… they’re dull as stones. But you and Thrain… you’re like sunlight on my skin. Why?”
Sleep, elskan mín, he told me, so I turned and asked what it meant. And he smiled that lazy smile of deepest satisfaction and said, it means my darling.
“But nothing can numb me completely to your scent.”
down. He runs a finger along the line of my jaw as he devours my expression. “I missed this face earlier,” he whispers. “The one you make when you come.”
Gods, that nest of furs and woollen covers looks so welcoming. I can just imagine the sleepy warmth of her body encased inside, how she would cling to me if I slipped in there with her.
Gods, why does she smell of home? A home I have never known, a home more familiar still than mine?
“I’ve never been surer of anything in all my life.”
“You’re mine,” I whisper. “Yes,” she rasps at me. “And you’re mine.”
