table. Black crested braid, a runic tattoo on his shaved skull… oh. Ivar. That’s Ivar. I hadn’t even recognised him – the environing nakedness is very distracting. He’s got black feathers stuck in his braid and soot smeared over half his face, casting his eyes and brow into shadow.
“What of that sacred woman? I see her in your chapels.” “Yes. The Blessed Mary. But she’s only human. She doesn’t make anything of her own. God placed himself in her belly and she served as his door into the world.” “It’s a strange god that must birth himself a second time,” Thrain rumbles. “Perhaps he knew he would not be entirely real until he was birthed by a woman.”
It’s so strange, the patterns one can make with teeth and tongue, how different they can feel. Where Thrain is crushing and irresistible, Ivar is all sharp edges and stings of pleasure, and Olaf… he is solemn, leading me on, controlling the pace.
