A month later, with conditions only worsening, Pierson asked for an in-person meeting. He laid out all of the evidence that quality was suffering and asked Campbell to shut down the line. “We can’t do that. I can’t do that,” Campbell said. Pierson replied that he had seen operations in the military shut down over less substantial safety issues.
