“So, you do like me, then?” I smiled at her joke. Little shit. “Yeah,” I told her. “I like you a lot.” A lot.
lifting me up. “I love you,” he whispered against my lips as he backed us away from the others. “And he can send me to prison again for a very long time. I’m not letting that happen now that I’ve found you. Please.”
“The only ones who can hurt you are the ones you love.” I closed my eyes.
“Did you ever love me?” I asked. He slowly approached me, staring hard. “Love is pain, Nik,” he told me. “It’s never felt good.” “Not even my love?”
He dropped his eyes, shaking his head. “I don’t want to hurt you. Anymore,” he added. “That’s all I know.”
“She was why you—” He nodded, his eyes softening as he held my gaze. “It was always for life, kid.” Always for life.
This was our life, after all, and we might trip over each other for a while yet, but we weren’t people who were okay with failing, either. We’d figure it out.
