“But still . . . he never cried.”
“It was all so easy,” she said quietly. “All you had to do was find out my name.”
Territorial is fine when it’s in the bedroom. It’s not fine when it keeps someone you’re supposed to love from living a life.
“I won’t hurt him,” I said, knowing what her worries were. “But I do need to protect myself, so I need to see him. Do you understand?” “You promise?” She looked so vulnerable. I couldn’t ask her to choose. I nodded. “Promise.”
“Delcour?” I shot out, turning to him. “Are you fucking kidding me?” How? “All this time,” he choked out, squeezing the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were white. “The Torrances sold Delcour in the eighties and built the new hotel in Whitehall to profit off the stadium.” “Delcour is the original Pope?”
“You knew?” I pressed. “You knew they owned the building? It was their hotel at one point?” “No, I didn’t know!” he growled. “We weren’t even born yet, for Christ’s sake! I just knew it was built in the thirties and that we didn’t always own it.”
That meant that when I was there, dropping off the contract at Michael’s party that night, my brother might’ve been in the building. I had no doubt he was in the city, but God . . . Why had he never told me about Delcour?
Kai grabbed me, wrapping his arms around my torso, under my arms, and lifting me up. “I love you,” he whispered against my lips as he backed us away from the others. “And he can send me to prison again for a very long time. I’m not letting that happen now that I’ve found you. Please.”
“It was always for life, kid.”
“Don’t you have a husband to slowly drain the life out of?” I heard Will complain as soon as I slammed the door. “What am I doing here?”
“You’re dead.” Kai pointed to Will. “Come on, man. Damn.” Will opened the back of the Jeep. “She’s your chick. Not mine.”
“Oh, my God,” Kai grumbled, turning back toward the house and shaking his head. “Nine dogs . . .”
“Oh, and I kind of brought Gabriel’s cook,” I said, stumbling up to him. “We could use her, right?” “Yeah, fine, fuck, whatever.” He entered the house and started pounding up the stairs. “Bring everybody. Doors are open. Why the hell not?”
