Will grabbed the picture off the table and joked, “Well, I’ll marry her.”
“Oh, yes, he did.” His eyes narrowed on me. “And you liked it. All you sluts like it. You’re going to let him take you away from me. You’re going to screw me over, and if you do, I will kill you. Do you hear me? I will fucking kill you.”
“A cemetery,” I say. “That’s how I’d get rid of a dead body.”
He looks up at me again, his eyes narrow, and I lift my chin, shrugging. “I’d find a freshly covered grave. That way they wouldn’t be able to tell it was re-dug. Put another body in there and cover it back up. That’s what I’d do.”
“You mean you like that they don’t have anyone to compare you to,” I said, “so they can’t tell how bad you are at it.”
“When we’re young, we are who we are out of necessity—we are who we’re taught to be. With freedom, though, comes the liberty to broaden our horizons. When we only have ourselves to answer to,”
People will think what they want to think, not because they believe they are right, but because it’s in their nature to maintain that they are. By defending yourself, you feed the appetite for drama. By not, you’ve ended the conversation. You. Not them.
“You make me feel driven. You make me hungry and on fire and wanting to slow down time instead of wanting to rush through it. It’s you I look for when I walk in the doors in the morning. Not her. You.”
Why are you sweet Kai? Your inner thoughts are a little sinister but you’re saying the right words I guess.
“And don’t forget your masks.” “Why?” Will shot out. “Because it’s Devil’s Night.”
“Blood is the tie that binds. The knot in your soul that says no matter where you go or what you do, there’s someone in this godforsaken, shithole hell of a world you’re forever connected to.” “Where are—” “It can be a curse,” he continued. “A burden. But it can also be your heartbeat. Your center, your purpose, your belonging . . .” He let out a breath, slowing down. “I’ve fucked up, I’ve lied, I’ve nearly torn myself apart in front of her, but she understands that that’s what family is about. Family is what life gives you to help you endure. Their place is by your side, no matter how much it

And then he leaned into her right ear, and she reared back but then stilled as if listening. I couldn’t see his mouth, but his jaw appeared to be moving. And she wasn’t pushing him away. Was he whispering to her? I watched her eyes, pinched together in fury, sharpen, and then, all of a sudden, her chest caved as her body froze. Her gaze fell, and she just stood there like she couldn’t move. Damon straightened back up and looked down at her, releasing her. “Fuck the world, Rika. You’re welcome.”
Damon wasn’t fighting back. He just squeezed his eyes shut, blood streaming out of his nose and down his face as Will attacked him again and again. “When you have nothing, you have nothing to lose.” His voice shook as he grunted. “Fuck it all, and fuck you.”
Blood matted Damon’s hair, trickling down his face with the rain. He gripped Will’s shirt and buried his head, trying to shield himself but not trying to stop it. He knew he deserved this.
“Did you ever love me?” I asked. He slowly approached me, staring hard. “Love is pain, Nik,” he told me. “It’s never felt good.” “Not even my love?” He dropped his eyes, shaking his head. “I don’t want to hurt you. Anymore,” he added. “That’s all I know.”
