Family.
He growled and grabbed his belt off the bed, throwing his arm out to ready the first whip across his back.
And dived in. Again and then again and again. I had to get it over with. Just do it. I sobbed louder, tears pouring down my face.
Something’s gotta give. How much pain could he take before he broke? How long until nothing was enough to appease him?
But his eyes were locked, following her as she crept forward, closer and closer. “I’ve missed you,” she carried on. “I need you. I’m so lonely. I’m so lost, baby, I—”
“I’ve waited for you to come for me,” she panted. “To take control. You’re the man now. Whatever my son needs.”
He held her, but she completely held his attention. “Take her,” she urged him. “Wash her clean. Just like Mama used to wash you.”
“If you love her, she can hurt you,” Natalya told him. “If you hurt her instead, she’ll never escape you. You’ll always own her. She’s yours. You don’t ask, and you don’t care. Take what’s yours. Take her.” Her voice dropped so low I could barely hear. “Take her.”
Damon might end up being so much worse than my father ever was.
“Lick her all up,” Natalya breathed out. “Take her home and claim her.”
“We’re all yours,” she whispered to her son as if Kai wasn’t there. “I’ll take care of you, baby. I’ll make sure her sweet little pussy is yours.”
So many kids who suffer abuse don’t like to be touched, but when Damon was spiraling out, he couldn’t get close enough to me. Like he just wanted to crawl inside my head, where he knew it was safe.
“It’s still inside me,” he choked out. “It hurts.”
I opened my mouth and bit down on the skin between his neck and his shoulder. Wrapping my arms around him, I felt him grunt as I dug my teeth harder into his skin. His arms snaked around me, and he held on tight, keeping me close. If Kai looked, it would just look like we were hugging.
“Like hell.” Kai scowled at him. “I saw it on your face, man. You’re a mess. You would’ve hurt her.”
People will think what they want to think, not because they believe they are right, but because it’s in their nature to maintain that they are. By defending yourself, you feed the appetite for drama. By not, you’ve ended the conversation. You. Not them.
What would’ve happened if he hadn’t interceded?
“I’ll never leave him,” I bit out at Kai. Not ever. I stepped over to my brother and took his hand, willing Kai to just go.
My brother squeezed my hand, a subtle gesture telling me he forgave me.
Damon pulled me in, kissing my forehead. “Good girl. You never let me down.”
CHAPTER 17
Guilt and shame, the feeling of Damon’s eyes on me, judging me, why couldn’t I get over it?
I nodded, understanding. If he didn’t sign, Damon would have no promise that he’d be welcome back in the city. If he came home, they might go after him.
I’d leave? Was that what was binding him to this stupid agreement?
“I woke up last night, wanting you again,” he said.
So, Damon wasn’t the only goal here.
“You wear his clothes,” Kai said to me. “You barely eat. He controls your freedom, your food, your friendships . . . What do you want, kid? If you were him, if you were a man, what would you do? What would you take?”
“Nah. That’s nice and sweet. Something I’ll do to the new little wife,” he taunted. “My toys get a little more wear and tear.”
But the truth was, I had nowhere else to go.
Gabriel wouldn’t take me back if I broke the deal, and I’d be out of the loop, unable to be Damon’s eyes and ears any longer.
Every inch of Kai that touched me last night had touched her once.
Even if Damon came home, even if some miracle reconciled him with his friends and there was no longer any bad blood, Kai Mori would still never be anything more to me than he was right now. Not with her around. He’d fucked her because he’d wanted her, and even if that desire lessened over time, it would never disappear. Just look at her. The perfect package. Smart, rich, pretty. And they all just thought she was the sweetest thing, too.
She whipped around, fury in her eyes. And I couldn’t stop the smile that peeked out. Yeah, I knew all about Pithom, Michael’s family’s yacht, last year and how he scared her. Not that I approved at the time, but God, I hoped he was going to do everything he could to make trouble for her now.
Is she okay? Your little princess threw the first punch, asshole.
Who hadn’t heard? They were seen, it was all over the club, and it was no secret how he felt about her. It was there every time he looked at her.
CHAPTER 18
Someday, when we were rich and all the problems were gone, we’d have pretty things, I’d be popular, and my real life would have started.
Yeah, I don’t like people, but it’s a conscious choice, not a hang-up.
That they’d completely arranged with my comfort in mind.
Alex was like a tornado, and she and Will talked too fast to let me think or argue. They started picking out stuff I hated, and before I knew it, I was tossing out garments I didn’t like and keeping ones I thought I might be able to wear. And after a few more minutes, I participated and shopped and shit.
I’d even enjoyed the feel of the slate gray lingerie when Alex shoved me in a dressing room to try it on. I thought about what Kai’s face would look like if he saw me.
“Well, thanks.” I glanced over at Alex in the seat next to me as Will drove. “And thanks for the ride home.”
But who was I to talk? I didn’t have a single healthy relationship in my life. At least they enjoyed each other.
“They will hurt you,” he told me. “And he will toss you out like trash, because that’s what sluts are. Trash.”
“If I was going to let my kid sister pass her pussy off to my friends,” he said, “I’d have at least given you to Will for first dibs. He was the most loyal.”
“Not because he betrayed me, but because you did,” he explained. “This will be all your fault.”
