Somehow, she’d worked her way under my skin, and I knew that she was there to stay. No matter what happened.
Maybe, just maybe, Everly didn’t have to be a sacrificial pawn, but a fucking queen.
My lips curved upward. I couldn’t help it. There was something about her that made me smile. I’d never known a person could give me so many conflicting feelings, but Everly somehow managed it.
She made me feel, she made me want to protect her. No woman had ever done that.
Saint: *Image attached* Saint: Which shoes? He’d sent me a picture of three pairs of identical black dress shoes in front of a mirror. Oh, yeah, he was shopping for the ball. Me: They all look the same Saint: Pick one Me: The ones in the middle Saint: I like the ones on the left best Me: Get the ones on the left then Saint: I’m gonna text Matty and ask Me: You do that
Me: DID YOU FUCKING BLOCK ME AGAIN? I swear I would kick his ass as soon as I got home. He had blocked me back in high school when I accidentally sent him a dick pic. It was a long month of communicating through Cal. Until he got fed up with it and held down Mateo while I unblocked myself from his phone.
Her pale face came into view, and I couldn’t help but stare. Fascination and obsession were funny things. You could marvel upon the same thing every day, and each time, you would find something new you liked about it. That was how I felt about her. Each time I found something new I liked, something new that made me want to stay, something new that made me want to stick around to find out what else she could surprise me with.
I’d known Cal since I was a little boy. He’d always been aloof and somewhat cold, so the way he looked at Everly was something new for him.
“How can I help?” I couldn’t help the smile that spread on my face. For hours, she stayed outside with us. She helped me and my brothers by getting us equipment. Handing out waters, keeping little kids entertained. I caught not only myself, but my brothers gazing at her in wonder. How could one girl be so perfect for all of us?
If they were the kings, then I was their queen. They’d made that clear to me. And I knew that they wouldn’t let anyone topple me from my throne.
“You look so fucking beautiful,” Saint spoke before I had a chance to say anything. His gaze raked over me from head to toe, and I could barely breathe. “Saint…” My voice came out as a whisper as I became aware of our surroundings again. There were eyes on us everywhere I looked. “Everyone’s looking at you. They all want you. They’re probably wondering why you’re here with me.” “No, they’re fucking not.” He shook his head emphatically. “Anyone would be lucky to have you as their date. You’re a ten, Everly.”
“That you’re now one of us. We live for each other and won’t hesitate to die for one another too, and that now includes you.”
