“Whoa, Nellie!” Inspector Drake called out as his horse suddenly reared up on her hind legs, spooked by the loud crack of the carriage. (Coincidentally, the horse was named Nellie.)
“As I said, this piece is necessary to survive a ball,” Miss Bolton told them. Before anyone could ask what in the world she was talking about, she fell backward off the roof, taking all of them with her. For a split second they hurtled toward the ground, Alice quivering, Beatrice screaming, and Drake with his one eye firmly shut. Then Miss Bolton pulled something within her hat, releasing a large silk parachute. It ballooned out and filled with air.
