I didn’t know if I felt responsible for the fact that she now only had four senses with which to experience the world, but it was a strange feeling to want to protect someone from others when I knew I’d be worse for her health than anyone else.
“You teach your daughter to hide in everyone else’s world,” I shot back, “and I’ll teach mine everyone else exists in hers.
“They didn’t see the way you would look at her at school, during lunch and in passing in the hallways. And how no one—no one,” he reemphasized the words, “fucked with her behind her back after what you did to any guy who disrespected her, like making an obscene gesture right next to her that she couldn’t see.”
“I can fuck my beautiful fiancée anytime I want,” he went on, “and she looks really amazing dressed only in that quarter-of-a-million-dollar necklace around her neck right now. A necklace I bought without asking my daddy for the money.”
“The queen is the most valuable player,” I told her, “but to win, she’s not the last one standing. Her job”—I paused, arching an eyebrow—“is to protect the king.”
I wanted to keep her happy, pure, and innocent, too. I didn’t want to ruin her.
When you find out who just fucked you, you’re gonna see plenty of red then.
The crime was I couldn’t tell her who I was. And the crime was she didn’t love me back. Her heart was so shallow, she couldn’t understand and know that I was real. Every moment with her, I was real. I would’ve been faithful, and I would’ve died protecting her.
My chest ached so badly it hurt to breathe. There was no one in the world like her.
“Don’t let me go,” I told her, breathing hard. “No matter what you hear or what they say, don’t let me go.”
I’d changed her forever. I’d bent and twisted and broken everything that made her the most beautiful thing that ever happened to me.
“I’m gonna send you to jail.” His lips rested against my cheek, and I thought I felt his body shake with a silent sob. But as I fell into sleep and oblivion, his words were sharp and clear in my ear. “Then you better hope I never get out.”
“It was pure, and it was a dream. I didn’t want to change you. I just wanted to be a part of it all. Of everything beautiful you were going to do.”
“Michael and Kai are smarter than you, you know?” she said. I listened. “Because if there’s one thing they know about revenge, Damon, it’s that it won’t feel nearly as good as her love will.”
Nothing in my life had ever felt as good as Winter happy because of me.
“Said she just wanted to have some space to think.” Think. I pinched the bridge of my nose. When women thought, shit didn’t go the way I wanted it to.
“That’s how you thank three females who just saved your ass?” Rika remarked, sounding all too amused. And then Alex tipped her chin at me, taunting, “Who’s your daddy?”
“You should’ve just left me there. Why didn’t you?” She was quiet, nudging her cheek into mine as she found her words. “Because I was afraid of life without the hope of you to look forward to.”
“If anyone knew what a vile cunt this world could be, it was us. But all I needed was you, and all you should’ve needed was me, and fuck all the rest. We would’ve done it. We would’ve won.”
“I could die happily right here.” “You’re not dying,” Winter argued. “You haven’t even told me you love me yet.”
I needed to think, she’d said. My dick was inside you four times last night. Now you needed to think? Really?
“With you bedridden, you can’t cause trouble,” he pointed out. “It’s nice.”
“Whatever is after you is failing,” I told him. “You’re not fucked. You’re the strongest of us all, because you’ve survived the most.”
If I ever thought I couldn’t do something with her, then I wasn’t doing it at all. “Your place is at my side,” I told her.
“My woman doesn’t ask permission. She’s a force.
I didn’t deserve anything I had, but I was doing everything to make sure I’d deserve whatever came. We’d have the family we would make, our friends, and our home, and every fucking night, I’d have her right here, surrounding me and getting lost with me where the rest of the world didn’t exist, and it was just us.
