She was quiet, nudging her cheek into mine as she found her words. “Because I was afraid of life without the hope of you to look forward to.”

If I ever thought I couldn’t do something with her, then I wasn’t doing it at all.
We sit there for a while, enjoying the noise of the waterfalls, the maze falling quiet and the lightning bugs starting to spark up around the hedges. The music and party disappear and nothing else exists except our little hideaway. “I wish we didn’t have to leave the fountain,” she says.
I wish we never had to leave the fountain. We never did.
