“Own who you are,” he commanded. “And don’t apologize. Do you understand? Own it or it will own you.”
“Your nightmare is over. Hers is just starting.”
When you were scared, your senses grew sharper. Fireflies in the night might look like a pair of eyes or the wind in the trees might sound like whispers.
“I’d take one to bed before your dick.”
“Corrupt” by Depeche Mode played over the speakers, and I flipped my hair to the side, tipping up the flask and taking a small swig, trying not to wince at the burn coating my throat.
Kai grabbed me and brought me to my feet, and I darted out, catching Astrid as she tried to run for the door. Fisting her hair, I shoved her into the wall next to her boyfriend and fought to keep the relieved tears at bay. “Don’t you ever touch me again!” I screamed at her and then stepped over, jutting out and spitting in Miles’ face. “Ever!”
“I am being nice to you, right?” he whispered, dragging his teeth across my jaw. “Yeah, she’d cut my fucking hand off if she knew just how nice I was being right now.”
Why her? Why, despite my mother, who always loved me, and my friends, who always had my back, was it Erika Fane who put the air in my lungs or made my blood run hot? She always got to me.
Redefine normal. None of us know the full measure of our power until we start pushing our boundaries and pressing our luck, and the more we do, the less we care what others think. The freedom feels too good.
Will retorted. “You’re the whole reason for all of this. If you hadn’t been with us that night, Trevor would never have shown up. Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t blame you. And now that I know you’re one of the good guys, I can admit that I actually really like you. But you’re Trevor’s motive, and you’re in Michael’s head. He needs to stay focused, and you’re the reason he’s not right now.”
I closed my eyes, breathing her in. “I love you so much,” I whispered, tightening my hold on her. “This is where I live.”
“People don’t see me, Rika,” I confide. “I only exist as a reflection of him.” She tilts her head up a little, her eyes still closed. “That’s not true,” she mumbles sleepily. “You’re always the first person I notice in a room.”
Life is one-way, and there is no return trip. What are you waiting for?”
