Every number he lists off is correct, and I decide that no man as hot as an inferno should be allowed to talk about library organizational methods. It’s too much. I need a fan. Or a respirator.

Silence descends between us after his statement. I can’t tell if he meant for those words to sound as dirty as they did. The problem is Cole has a dark, almost sultry voice that can make anything sexy. I bet listening to him read a cellphone contract could get me wet.

“Romance-hero tall. Survey the height of heroes in the genre, and I’d bet over ninety percent surpass six foot. It’s like only tall men are allowed to fall in love.”

Cats. Never clear about what they want, but will make sure to punish you if you don’t figure it out.

“Only give me real smiles. If you’re sad, frown at me. If you’re mad, scowl.”

“Black works for me today,” I repeat. “But when I’m happy again—and I will be—I won’t be able to stop myself.” “From doing what?” he murmurs, his stare seeming to catch on my mouth. “From trying to paint you in colors.”

“Sorry!” She tilts her head back, still chuckling, actual tears gathering in the corner of her eyes. “It’s just, next time remind me to make out with you before I put on my lipstick.” My attention drops to her mouth, and I realize the burgundy color on her lips is smeared at the edges.

“You were wearing a blue dress and a bunch of jingly bracelets. When I asked where the writers group was meeting you smiled at me like I said you won the lottery. So yeah, I wanted to find a private room, push your skirt up, and make your jewelry rattle.”

“There are weirder kinks. I’m not exactly the right build though.” I glance down at my slim, slightly underfed body. “I’m not looking for the belly.” Is she panting? “You find the outfit and call me a ho, and I will demolish you. You’ll want to relocate to the North Pole and pretend it’s Christmas year-round.”

And I can’t help remembering how my first crush was Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Apparently I have a thing for brunettes obsessed with books.

“You’re important to me, Cole. I don’t want to lose you because I’m scared I’ll lose you.”
