One of the most important statements here from the perspective of philosophical theology is that God did not create “in time” but “with time.” That is, according to Augustine, time itself is part of creation, so that the question about what God was doing before creation is meaningless. Also, God created ex nihilo – out of nothing. Augustine’s final comment here is both honest and humble in that it reminds us there is much in this narrative we don’t understand.
