He is no less alone than they are, and no less unmoored from his past. However, he can’t do for himself what he can do for them. He suspects that the oncoming totalitarian horror that he has recently foreseen, including mass murders on the scale committed by Stalin and Hitler, will require him to remain nameless and to soon undertake a mission that eventually will be the end of him.
