In 1934, more than 1,000 delegates of the Women’s Co-operative Guild congress voted to demand that abortion was decriminalised and made as safe and accessible as any other medical procedure. The guild also called for women serving prison sentences for breaking ‘antiquated laws’ to be amnestied. ‘Children should be born through choice and not because of fear,’ said Mrs Day, who moved the resolution.
