Americans waste about 141 trillion calories worth of food every day. That adds up to approximately $165 billion per year: 4 times the amount of food Africa imports each year.52
By 2050 over half the world’s economy will be generated by Asia.25 There will be 10 billion people on the planet by 2050.27 5.2 billion will live in Asia.27 If those 5 billion consumed at the same level as today’s richest billion people their consumption would be 5 to 10 times higher.28, 29 It would be like living on a planet of at least 46 billion people.28, 29 We have seen in this book the damage that our current consumption has caused – imagine the damage that could be done with 10 times the consumption.30 Hence any solutions to save the planet must be led or co-led by Asia.31
