This isn't the first time the author has said "floor" when referring to the ground outside. It's a strange choice and reminds me of the language of elementary schoolers. Maybe this is done to drive home that the protagonists are school-aged, but I'm curious why, then, the verbiage is in the narration and not the dialogue.
