The no ethical consumption under capitalism operates as an escape hatch now. Originally it was meant as a way to offer support for people who are forced to make difficult choices despite their best efforts to avoid supporting unethical practices. For example, despite being vegan, our taxes go towards subsidies for animal agriculture. The same is true for our taxes going towards wars and other things we may object to.
