I was glad Jennet Weyward did not live to see her daughter thus.

It’s a feeling she’s had since childhood: that she is somehow separate, closed off from everyone else.

I began to scratch, fingernails tearing at the tiny bauble of flesh below my rib cage. Below my heart.
