The United States had certainly not played that role, nor had it taken on the higher moral ground when vetoing at least thirty times U.N. Resolutions in support of measures of justice for the Palestinian people. I am ashamed to be living in a country that advocates justice, democracy, and human rights, yet has been spineless, and even colluding, with the injustices inflicted on the people of Palestine.

Papa, who had political contacts from his days on the Jerusalem City Council, managed to reach a Jewish friend, Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. In the early 1920s Ben-Zvi was a founding member of the Haganah, the underground Jewish defense organization, and much later he became the second President of Israel.
