Great note

wanted to view their job as being a part of building some massive cathedral over multiple generations. But in reality it was more like building a temporary outhouse near a battlefield.

Capitalism at it's finest

The list started promising. New potatoes with rosemary. Pork medallions. Roasted asparagus. Corn chowder. Garden salads. This was insane. They were willing to pay ten times our asking price for the Catering Basics. The Catering Top Five. “Money for nothing...” as the hit song on the radio crooned.

This is not good

“Now, I wonder if you can access snake carcasses.”

Here we go

“You know,” I said, “I know a guy who does snake stuff. A snake hunter type fella. Yeah. I’ll get hooked up with him. No problem. We’ll make it work.”

People love this name

That is, if the music hit that brief nothing that exists between songs. Tina called it the Nothing That Is. An eternal pause, a place of safety before the chaos of guitar and drums. She said she sometimes cherished that moment more than anything.

There it is

“Oh,” he added, as I got up to leave, “Lorraine said you still haven’t bought a new answering machine. We needed it yesterday. Who knows how many gigs we might be missing.” “I thought Lorraine didn’t work here?”

scribbled some half-earnest plea for her love, but it ended up sounding goofy and playful. I quoted some lyrics from The Cure. The oily paper folded easily and I shoved it into her mailbox slot.

This weirdness for Tina would make more sense if we had more scenes with her

“Because that’s how long she kept breathing after they split her open.”

Why we misspelling Lorraine this late in the book

Was pleasure a by-product of pain? Or was pain a by-product of pleasure?
