If all the black space between the stars and more than a hundred years had not been able to keep Ketahn and Ivy apart, this door certainly would not prevent their reunion.
This was revenge, but it was not justice.
Ivy understood why Ahnset had taken the sickly human. Ahnset had been nothing but gentle and caring when it came to Ella, and never would have harmed her on purpose, but… It was too soon for that understanding to make a difference.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
They would weave their own fates forever onward, the will of the Eight be damned.
“Scars mean different things to humans,” Ivy said in vrix.
“For many of us, they are…pain instead of pride.”
“Say that scars were pain. She should not look upon them with shame. She does not have to feel pride, but when she sees them, she should take pride in herself. Because she survived whatever left them. Because she, like each of you, is strong.”
“There is a place in Takarahl called the Den of Spirits,” Ahnset said softly. “They say the spirits of all vrix who came before dwell there, watching over us, guiding us. That is where Ella died. But…I do not think her spirit would have remained in that place. She would have returned to the Tangle. Returned to you.”
“I cannot overpower you,” she whispered, “but I will conquer you all the same.”
“Perhaps we were fools to believe anything impossible,”
But we heal. We mend. We find our strength.
In her time exploring Ketahn’s body, Ivy had discovered spots that were not quite so hard and armor-like. Spots that were softer beneath that leathery hide. His throat, the underside of his jaw, the insides of his joints and under his arms. And the insides of his forearms from wrist to elbow.
“Ivy Thoztur, Slayer of the Blooddrinker Queen, Kaldarak sees you as queen of Takarahl. We welcome peace between yours and mine.”
Ivy reached up and placed her fingers beneath Ahnset’s chin, raising it. In vrix, she said, “Takarahl would be better served with you as queen.”
“Before all of you and the Eight, I declare Ahnset tes Ishuun’ani Ir’okari queen of Takarahl in my place.”
“Akalahn. Akalahn tes Ivy’ani Ul’okari. Son of the
female who freed Takarahl, the once-queen. He who is our hope, our joy, our future.”
