“Let me take you on a date, and we’ll call it a deal. I’ll fire Patrick,” I call out—only half joking. It’s her turn to laugh now. It filters back toward me, melodic and amused. “No chance, Stefan. You’d fall in love with me, and then I definitely couldn’t be your vet.”
I respect him enough to let him walk away from the sport while he’s still healthy. Could I run him into the ground for another season and make some cash? Probably. But I refuse to do that to an animal who has run his heart out for me and my business. He deserves better.
“She had a bad day and could use some company. I promise I still gave my Amex a workout on your behalf. I have excellent wine and beautiful food and if you come in, I will provide you with a perfectly platonic home cooked meal.”
“Mmhmm. It seems they have some questions for me. Someone egged Principal Cooper’s car last night. Of course, we were all at my house having dinner. So, I just need to clarify that for them. May I put you down as a witness?”
