He was quiet for a moment. “That is none of your concern.” I tensed at his words. “The slaughter of an innocent child should be of everyone’s concern.”
“While I’m not suggesting you don’t attempt to fight me—you do whatever you feel you need to—you should know that you will not win. Ever.”
Even in the moonlight, his skin was a lustrous, golden-brown color, reminding me of wheat. His cheekbones were high and broad, his nose straight as a blade, and his mouth…it was full and wide. He had the kind of face an artist would love to shape with clay or capture with charcoal.
looked up to his eyes. Silver. Eyes that were an incredible, luminous shade of silver, bright as the moon itself.
he…kissed me like he wouldn’t allow a single part of my mouth to go unexplored. As if he’d been waiting for ages to do this.
But a babe was truly innocent and relied on everyone around it, including the gods, to keep it safe. Killing one was unforgivable.
If I had a child, or if any descendant of mine had been harmed, I would burn through both realms just so I could flay the skin from the body of the one who’d hurt them.
“You,” he said, his thumb moving in a slow swipe over the side of my throat. There was something about the way he said that. “You are trouble.”
“I don’t need a dagger,” I said, my voice thready. “And I’m not a lady.”
“You’re a blessing, Sera. No matter what anyone says or believes, you are a blessing. You always have been. You need to know that.”
“I’m going to kill you.” I barely recognized the voice as mine. “I will slice the hands from your body and then carve your heart from your chest before setting it on fire. I will watch you burn.”
He was…he was like the brightest star and the deepest night sky given mortal form. And he was utterly beautiful in this form, wholly terrifying.

“Don’t do that.” “Do what?” “Smile at me,” he murmured, the silver in his eyes swirling. “Why?” “Because when you do that, there’s utterly nothing I would not allow you to do to me.” I smiled fully then.
