As soon as she was facing the other direction, he fished one of the heretic rings out of his boot where he’d hidden it. He promptly stood back up and hid the obsidian band in his hand, adding, “Let me ask you, how would you like to be immortal?” “It hasn’t worked out real well for you.” Rebecca turned back around to face him. “True, but that’s just because I was cursed before I understood the power I had gained. You could be different.” He left out the part about barely remembering anything about what had happened to him as a crooked grin crept across his face. Then he opened his hand to show her the ring. “This will give you the power to heal any wound, stop you from aging, and control over magic so powerful that you shall never fear death.” He might have exaggerated a bit, but none of it was technically a lie as far as he knew. The drone hesitated for a few seconds, then moved closer to the ring. Its glass eye rotated as if examining the glossy, black band in detail. “This is what gave you that power?” “And it’s the reason that I regained my intelligence as a zombie. Just think of all that you could become.” He closed his hand around the ring. “All I ask is that you help me for the night. Once I’m safely out of this city, I’ll hand this ring over to your drone and you can fly it back to wherever you are and claim it as your own.
