The theology present in the Lord’s Supper may have been the reason why the early church, to say nothing of the earliest church, apparently thought that the work of Christ was clear but that the person of Christ was mysterious! Council after council addressed the Son’s nature and constitution, yet no ecumenical council dealt explicitly or primarily with Christ’s work.
