This has revealed a paradox. Whereas the judicial and the legislative weakening of the Bill of Rights has been instrumental in allowing the death penalty, voter suppression, and racial profiling to undermine African Americans’ citizenship rights, the Second Amendment, despite numerous massacres and thousands of gun deaths, has become only more constitutionally and legally entrenched—for everyone, that is, except African Americans.
