“Angel, around you, I don’t have to play. You make me stupid. I can’t get anything right.”
“Gah.” I can’t even pretend. “Your body is ridiculous.” “I’m glad you think so. I might never wear a shirt again if you keep looking at me like that.”
“And you thought inviting a girl over was the answer?” “I’ll be distracted by you either way.” My stomach flips. This freaking guy.
“Sometimes, when I’m with you, my chest feels tight like I’ve been pushing my body too hard.”
“I know it seems like my brain doesn’t work when you’re around, but I do remember the things you say.”
“You’re the only girl I want to slop beer on,” he replies playfully and winks.
Sneaking around is fun, but watching my teammates glare at me with jealous eyes—that’s fucking awesome.
“I wanna know you,” he says quietly. “All the things.”
“I like you.” I tip her chin up with a hand and lean in, lower my voice. “A lot.”
“How do you know my routine so well?” “The same reason I’m sure this isn’t a rebound.”
Two minutes ago I wouldn’t have thought I was capable of laughing. All day I’ve been worrying about her, but here I am smiling and feeling calmer. That’s just what it’s like with Sienna. She makes bad days better. She makes everything better.
I’m almost asleep again when his deep voice sounds again. “I think I’m in love with you.”
He smooths a hand down my hair and pulls me farther onto him so my head rests in the center of his chest. My heart flutters. I think I love you too.
She smiles sadly. “If you want to be with your family or by yourself, I’ll understand.” I kick off my shoes and drag my legs up so I’m beside her on the bed. “I’m exactly where I want to be.”
“She’s incredible. I love her. I love her in ways I never thought I could love a person. I thought it would be enough.”
Music, applause, the chill in the air. It isn’t until my name is called that I snap to attention. I take the ice and I skate for Rhett. I skate for my family. But most of all, I skate for me.
“Sending chicks I’m interested in pictures of my dog to get their attention. It’s a signal and way more effective than nudes.” “Wait a minute.” I pull out my phone and scroll up toward the beginning of mine and Rhett’s text history, then show Mav. He covers his mouth with a fist. “Worked, didn’t it?”
“Of course, she’s fucking strong enough. I didn’t leave because I don’t think she’s healthy enough to deal. Fuck. Is that what she thinks? I’m angry and sad, and she doesn’t deserve any of that. She’s an angel.” My angel.
I knew she’d be here. I could feel her and every step closer to the ice feels like I’m rushing to the finish line. She’s it for me. She’s my endgame.
“I’m both. I can survive a lot of things, but not living without you.”
“I love you so much. I’m so sorry I left. Never again. I’ll prove it however you want me to, as many times as you want me to.” “You already own my heart. I don’t know when it happened, but I am madly in love with you too.”
“Oh my god, Rhett Rauthruss, did you sync my watch to your phone?” “Damn right I did, angel.”
