The Senate House was attached to the Theatre of Pompey and had in fact been built by Pompey while Caesar was away conquering Gaul. It was a magnificent place, a temple to Roman senatorial power, and at its centre was a statue of Pompey himself. There were around three hundred senators, and they had been waiting a long time.
