Camden felt his eyelid twitch. For fuck’s sake. Grinding his teeth, he whipped the door open. But it wasn’t Grant standing on the other side of it. It was Bailey. And she wasn’t simply
standing there, she was doing a pirouette because … well, because she was Bailey—someone who constantly did weird shit and apparently saw no need to stop.
Bailey gave him a bright smile. “Well hello, thundercloud. Someone piss in your coffee? Bummski. You can’t blame me this time.”
Eying the toddler in the inflatable ring, Aspen frowned. He wore a look of pure concentration, and his cute little face was beginning to turn purple. He’d better not be having a shit in the pool.
“Floater!” a little boy bellowed, and then there was screeching and splashing. Aspen hissed. “Goddammit, I knew that kid was taking a shit.” She exchanged a pained look with the other lifeguard as they directed swimmers out of the pool.
He looked at Bailey. “You’re like the sister I never wanted and am glad I don’t have.” The mamba smiled and put a hand on her chest. “Aw, thanks.”
“Why do you take Havana’s advice but never mine?” complained Bailey, sitting at the long table. Was the woman kidding? “Oh, maybe because you like believe that logic is for losers.” “It can be an obstacle at times,” the mamba insisted.
On the row behind them, the mamba leaned forward and said, “Um, Camden, if you don’t ease up on the marking, Aspen’s going to have people handing her pamphlets in the street about seeking help for domestic abuse.” “Bailey,” Havana barked. “What?” asked the mamba, her eyes wide. “She has fingerprint bruises on her throat. Ooh, are you guys into choking and stuff? How intriguing. Is it hot, Aspen? I’ll bet it’s hot. Did he do it for a few seconds or keep it up until you almost passed out? Oh no, wait, he didn’t make you pass out, did he? I guess it’s okay if you get off on it.
Staring at the door, the mamba didn’t respond. Aspen nudged her with her elbow. “Hey.” Bailey turned to face her and blinked. “What?” “Will you mind?” “Mind what?” Aspen sighed. “Were you even listening?” “Not really. I was wondering what the first person who milked an animal was actually attempting to do.”
